Sensorial Refinement
Winter 2018
Repository of time: A time capsule, a spacial representation of place, time, and culture. We were tasked with designing a museum in the Carrizo Plain focusing on an aspect of our choosing. The product of this is Sensorial Refinement. A museum that focuses on the sensorial aspects of the Carrizo Plain and how they can be manipulated to create a different experience than that of the natural world. This was achieved by isolating each sense and experiencing the Carrizo one sense (floor) at a time.
The Muffler
What began as innocently cutting open a motorcycle muffler found at a used auto part shop turned into the inspiration for this project in the Carrizo Plain. From the muffler came Penetration, Enclosure, and Conversion. Using these three design drivers I manipulated the muffler to embody its primal function of air flow and conversion. This is the process model.
Floor Plans
Each level isolates a specific sense. For example, on floor 01, he only sense that can be experiences is touch. It is silent, dark, and sterile. As you walk you feel the ground change to mimic the feeling of walking on the soda lake.
site plan
The site is located in the Carrizo Plain in California, a national park as well as a Chumash tribal village site.
